A new era for a historic Brooklyn neighborhood
Once known for its high crime rates, Brownsville is now experiencing a resurgence
WEB Brownsville is a residential neighborhood in eastern Brooklyn in New York City. The neighborhood is generally bordered by Crown Heights to the northwest. Located in east Brooklyn, Brownsville has long been one of New York City's most dangerous neighborhoods. In 2021 there were an estimated 123,956 people in Brownsville, of which 17% identified as white, 79% as Black, and 4% as Asian.
But in recent years, Brownsville has begun to turn a corner. Crime rates have fallen, and new businesses and developments are popping up. The neighborhood is now home to a diverse population of working-class families, artists, and young professionals. Brownsville is a neighborhood on the rise, and its future is bright.
